ROHTO Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Osaka City, President: Masafumi Sugimoto) will release three new products from its "SKIN AQUA" line, which has been offering sunscreens that can be used comfortably every day like skincare: "Hyaluronic Acid Serum UV," which combines skincare and sunscreen effects and contains the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid *1; "Tone Up UV Essence Ephemeral Blue," a new color from the popular tone-up series that creates fair skin *2; and "Natural Veil UV Essence Clear White/Rose," which provides a gentle feel on the skin and creates naturally beautiful skin *2 with a radiant glow. These products will be available from Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at drugstores nationwide, Rohto's online store, and e-commerce sites.
In recent years, with increasing levels of ultraviolet radiation and growing concerns about the effects of prolonged summer heat on the skin, sun protection has become increasingly important, and it has become commonplace for people of all genders and ages to use sunscreen daily. Furthermore, recent research has revealed that when choosing sunscreen, people are now prioritizing not only "sun protection effectiveness" but also various other factors such as "ease of daily use," "comfort," and "gentleness on the skin." In response to these diversifying needs, we propose new products that can be incorporated into daily life with a more positive attitude towards sun protection, supporting the health of our customers' skin.

A comparison of the results of sunscreen surveys from 2018 and 2024 revealed that the factors women prioritize when choosing sunscreen have diversified. Beyond just "sunscreen effectiveness," various other factors such as "ease of use," "gentleness on the skin," and "convenience for daily use" are now considered important.

Diversifying needs
While sun protection remains the most important factor, overall, it has shown a downward trend. On the other hand, interest in other factors has increased, indicating the emergence of diverse needs. In particular, "usability for everyday wear," which was 4.60% (7th place) in the 2018 survey, increased significantly in 2024, suggesting that sunscreen has become an established part of daily life, not just for leisure or special occasions. Furthermore, there was a significant increase in the importance placed on "gentle on the skin."

New signs of skincare effectiveness
Regarding the "contains skin-beneficial ingredients," the percentage rose from 0.2% (19th place) in 2018 to 3.1% (9th place) in 2024, indicating a growing demand for skincare benefits. Furthermore, new selection criteria have emerged, such as being non-chemical for gentleness on the skin and the expectation of skin tone-up effects.
These results show that, due to the prolonged periods of extreme heat and lingering summer heat, as well as increased awareness of UV rays, the needs for sunscreen, a product used daily, are diversifying. Sunscreen, like skincare, is now chosen based on individual values, and there are signs that people are seeking value beyond simply "preventing sunburn."
