Presentation at the 36th International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) World Congress:
Discovery of a new moisturizing function in phytoexosomes utilizing sake fermentation technology.
October 2, 2026
ROHTO Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Osaka City, President: Hidetoshi Segi) presented a poster at the 36th International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) World Congress, held in Perth, Australia from September 28 to October 1, 2026, showcasing its research findings on phytoexosomes utilizing sake fermentation technology.
Presentation Title
Scalable Production of Sake-Derived Exosomes
"Learning from Ancient Japanese Fermentation Wisdom to Develop an Efficient Bioactive Exosome Production Platform"
Leveraging traditional Japanese fermentation wisdom, we aim to stably produce exosome-like nanovesicles derived from sake that possess physiological activity.

Result summary
*SELNs=Sake-derived Exosome-Like Nanovesicles
In recent years, exosomes have attracted attention as mediators of intercellular communication in aging research. However, animal-derived exosomes have challenges in terms of safety, stability, quality control, and industrialization, and the use of plant- and microorganism-derived exosome-like nanovesicles (phytoexosomes) is expected to be beneficial.
In this study, to address these challenges, we focused on sake fermentation technology and successfully developed phytoexosomes (SELNs) derived from rice fermentation products efficiently. We confirmed that SELNs increase the expression of moisturizing factors and exhibit wound healing effects in cells, and further confirmed in human clinical trials that they increase the water content of the stratum corneum of the skin and the amount of amino acids, which are components of natural moisturizing factors (NMF).
By utilizing this technology, we expect to develop foundational technologies that will enable the stable and large-scale production of next-generation functional exosomes.
About IFSCC
The IFSCC (The International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists) is an international organization established in 1959 with the aim of promoting the development of cosmetic science and technology and fostering international exchange. Currently, it comprises cosmetic chemists' societies from around the world and is comprised of many cosmetic researchers and chemists.
The IFSCC Congress is a forum where cosmetics researchers and technicians from around the world gather to present and discuss the latest research findings. It is positioned as one of the world's largest international academic conferences, bringing together cutting-edge research results from around the globe and driving the advancement of cosmetics science.
