Bringing the "joy of seeing" to the world beyond borders! Launching "domestic and international eye care support activities" for the 10th year with 10 business partners

Sustainability

Bringing the joy of sight across borders to the world! We've launched our 10th annual "Domestic and International Eye Care Support Program" with 10 business partners. As a "Social Partner," we're expanding our support base, from ophthalmic medical support to everyday eye care awareness campaigns, by donating a portion of our eye drop sales.

November 28, 2025

ROHTO Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Osaka City, President: Hidetoshi Segi) will, as part of its activities to support the "joy of seeing" for people around the world, donate a portion of its sales to support ophthalmic medical care, such as cataract treatment, in Asia, Africa, and other regions, in collaboration with 10 business partners. For this 10th year of the program, a portion of sales from December 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026 will be donated not only to support ophthalmic medical care, such as cataract treatment, mainly in Asia and Africa, but also to organizations in Japan that work to protect the eyesight of children.
Launched in 2016, this initiative is now in its tenth year and continues to expand into a social contribution activity that supports the "visible joy" of people around the world and the children who will shape Japan's future, through collaboration between companies that transcend traditional boundaries.

Total amount of donations to date

From the first to the ninth phase, we received support from 38 of our business partners, and the total amount donated is 17,127,360 yen.

Background of the activities

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide, and it is estimated that tens of millions of people still lose their sight each year. Cataracts are a disease in which the lens of the eye, which acts as the eye's lens, becomes cloudy, leading to decreased vision. In Japan, advances in surgical techniques have significantly reduced blindness due to cataracts, but in developing countries, poverty, a shortage of doctors and medical equipment, and underdeveloped surgical systems mean that many people still cannot receive treatment. Our company has been working to provide free eye examinations, intraocular lenses, and train local doctors, but our support has not been sufficient. With the desire to bring the "joy of seeing" to more people, we have been collaborating with our business partners as "social partners" to expand the circle of support.
Furthermore, in recent years, childhood myopia has been rapidly increasing in Japan, making the importance of daily eye care awareness even greater. Our company is strengthening awareness activities and product development to protect children's eyes, and in our 10th term, we will add "Rohto Kodomo Soft" to our target product line and work even harder with our social partners to support activities that protect children's eyes.

Donation recipient

In addition to our existing efforts to support organizations and medical institutions in Asia, Africa, and other regions that treat cataracts that can cause blindness, provide technical guidance on cataract surgery, and donate ophthalmic medical equipment and intraocular lens medications, we now plan to donate to organizations that work to protect children's eyes.

Results of the 9th Phase of Support Activities

OUI Inc. (OUI Corporation)

OUI Inc. is a venture company spun off from Keio University School of Medicine, founded by a practicing ophthalmologist. Their mission is to reduce blindness worldwide by 50% and protect people's health through eye care. Based on the concept of spreading the "eyes" of ophthalmologists to the world, they have developed a smartphone-attachable ophthalmic diagnostic device called Smart Eye Camera (SEC). Using the portable and easy-to-use SEC, they are dedicated to delivering ophthalmic care to patients around the world, including those in developing countries, who have previously had difficulty accessing ophthalmic medical care itself.
In the 9th term, opportunities to communicate the value of SEC on an international stage expanded significantly. A joint project with TBWA/HAKUHODO was shortlisted in the Pharma category of "Cannes Lions 2025," providing an opportunity to demonstrate its significance as a medical device to the world. We also participated in ophthalmology conferences in Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Nigeria, exchanging opinions with many doctors, which led to its introduction in Somalia. Furthermore, in Brazil, we visited a screening project for indigenous people, experiencing firsthand the expansion of telemedicine. Through these activities, we are advancing the development of collaborative models with local medical institutions and conducting full-scale pilot programs with the support of international organizations such as the ADB and IDB.

NPO Asia Blindness Prevention Association

The NPO Asia Blindness Prevention Association was founded by a group of volunteers who sympathized with Dr. Tadashi Hattori, a graduate of the Department of Ophthalmology at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine. With the desire to prevent even one person from losing their sight in the Indochina Peninsula and other poor countries in Asia, mainly Vietnam, the organization provides free ophthalmic treatment and technical training in those areas.
In fiscal year 2025 (*), we expanded our medical support efforts, primarily in Vietnam and the Philippines, with the aim of preventing blindness. We provided education and training in ophthalmic medical technology at institutions such as the Hanoi Medical University Hospital and the Municipal Eye Hospital. Furthermore, between October 2024 and August 2025, we provided free cataract surgery and technical support to over 700 people, mainly in provincial cities in both countries. The organization's ongoing activities have been highly praised locally, including the awarding of an honorary medal from Ninh Thuan Province in Vietnam. In addition, the year was also dedicated to human resource development, including accepting volunteers from Japanese and local high school students and providing them with opportunities to learn about the field of medical support.
