Regenerative medicine is a medical treatment that uses healthy cells to restore the damaged functions of dysfunctional or dysfunctional biological tissues and organs. It has the potential to bring about new medical treatments for injuries and illnesses that have no treatments available with conventional medicine. Regenerative medicine techniques are also being used to elucidate the causes of intractable diseases and to conduct clinical trials of drugs.
The focus was on stem cells
Regenerative medicine restores function by regenerating tissues and organs lost due to illness or injury. Japan is a world leader in establishing legislation for Regenerative medicine, and research has been progressing to make it one of the pillars of "future medicine." In order to make Regenerative medicine a more familiar medical treatment, Rohto Pharmaceutical established a department in 2013 and is currently conducting research.
Rohto Pharmaceutical is working on treatments using stem cells, which have the potential to cure unmet medical needs for which no treatment has been found so far through conventional medical treatments. Stem cells are the cells that form the body's cells. Among stem cells, we have focused on mesenchymal stem cells, which have the ability to differentiate into various types of cells and have been reported to have a wide variety of effects. With the cooperation of universities and other research institutions, we have been conducting clinical research with a view to implementing this technology in society.
Unique technology utilized in "Regenerative medicine"
In venturing into new fields, we are leveraging two technologies we have cultivated over the years as our unique strengths: "cell handling technology" gained through research and development in the skincare field, and "sterile formulation technology" for manufacturing eye drops. Based on these, we are developing unique technologies in Regenerative medicine, and expanding our business based on three pillars: "cell manufacturing," "cell culture-related technology," and "product development based on the 'regenerative concept.'"
Our goal is to become a leader in products and services related to Regenerative medicine using mesenchymal stem cells. In order to make Regenerative medicine more accessible, we aim to make further progress in revitalizing Regenerative medicine in Japan by utilizing the know-how we have accumulated.
