Established by Rohto Pharmaceutical in 1995, this award is presented to two young ophthalmology researchers who are conducting outstanding research, with the aim of supporting and promoting ophthalmology research and thereby contributing to the advancement and development of ophthalmology research in Japan. The recipients are selected through a rigorous and fair selection process by a selection committee consisting of seven renowned ophthalmologists, and give a commemorative lecture. Highly regarded among ophthalmology researchers as an award that purely supports research, many recipients have gone on to devote themselves to academic research as professors, and the award has now grown into a prestigious award known as a stepping stone for young researchers.
Features
This award is given to young researchers who have achieved results in both basic and clinical research. It highlights researchers who are not limited to their field of expertise, but who are also well-versed in surgery and patient data and have excellent character, and who literally carry the future of ophthalmology on their shoulders. The award's unique characteristics have led to researchers who have grown dramatically since receiving it, and who have produced talented people who will lead the academic world, which is a major achievement.
Target Audience
Ophthalmology researchers affiliated with a Japanese university or equivalent research institute who are 44 years of age or younger as of the end of the application year. (One applicant per university (research institute).)
Award
Two winners will receive the ROHTO AWARD and a prize of 3 million yen each.

Details on how to apply for the award will be published in various ophthalmology-related journals starting in July each year.
