Towards Scope 3 reduction
Rohto Pharmaceutical began calculating Scope 3 emissions in fiscal 2021 to understand CO2 emissions throughout its supply chain. As Scope 3 emissions account for approximately 95.7% of total CO2 emissions, we take seriously the importance of reducing emissions and will further strengthen and promote company-wide efforts together with our suppliers.

Our Initiatives
Initiatives at Plants
We have introduced a cogeneration system, which reduces the amount of electricity purchased during peak demand periods and makes effective use of exhaust heat for heating and cooling. Furthermore, the new factory building has introduced a geothermal heat pump system, which is not affected by sunlight hours or weather, and is being used to reduce the load on air conditioning. We are promoting the electrification of energy in factories and are also promoting the use of renewable energy by switching purchased electricity to a renewable energy source (CO2-free option). In fiscal 2024, we will further electrify our energy by replacing gas-fired hot water boilers with heat pump water heaters, and will have switched 75.8% of the electricity purchased at factories and research laboratories to CO2-free electricity. We aim to achieve this 100% switch by 2030.
We are also moving forward with the introduction of solar power generation. In fiscal 2024, a new solar power generation facility, our third in our group, will begin operation at our mother factory, the Ueno Factory. We are also gradually introducing solar power generation facilities at factories of our domestic and overseas group companies.
Initiatives in logistics
Our products are mainly pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, so they are relatively small in size, and each delivery tends to be a small, diverse mix. However, we are working to improve delivery efficiency by consolidating deliveries and ordering by pallet level. We are also working with our business partners to achieve a modal shift, which has led to a reduction in CO2 emissions. We will continue to work with our business partners to improve efficiency and strive to be environmentally conscious.
Modal shift
Together with our agents, we are promoting a modal shift from land transport (trucks) to more efficient marine transport (ferries), starting with deliveries to the Kyushu region. This initiative is helping to address the driver shortage, improving the working environment for drivers involved in long-distance transport, and contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions.
Joint delivery (shipper collaboration)
In response to challenges in the logistics industry, such as labor shortages and long working hours for drivers, we have partnered with Milbon Co., Ltd., Haleon Japan Co., Ltd., and Toyo Warehouse Co., Ltd. to begin joint deliveries in August 2025, which combine common products on delivery routes. Taking into account constraints such as pallet size, transport volume, and product safety, we select products suitable for joint delivery, verify loading techniques, and conduct quality tests, and aim to maximize transport efficiency by connecting manufacturing bases and warehouses using a relay system. We will contribute to building a sustainable supply chain by reducing CO2 emissions and driver workloads.
[Award] This initiative won the category award (director-general level award) "Logistics Structural Reform Award" jointly with the four companies at the "2025 Logistics Partnership Excellent Business Awards" sponsored by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (award presented on December 23, 2025, announcement on December 24).
Reduced delivery frequency
We aim to build a sustainable delivery system that increases logistics efficiency while reducing environmental impact and transportation costs. By utilizing the overhead space of trailers and improving loading efficiency from 65% to a maximum of 95%, we have been able to reduce the number of trailers transporting products from factories to the Kanto warehouse from four to three per day. We will continue to work on improving efficiency and efficiency.
Improved loading efficiency
Aiming to maximize the use of pallet area for loading, we are promoting improvement activities such as optimizing pallet usage. Comparing 2021 and 2024, the utilization rate of loading in which pallet area is fully utilized (pallet area utilization rate of 80% or more) increased by 8 points.
Initiatives at Offices
We have introduced casual Fridays every Friday and Cool Biz in the summer, and are working to save energy in the office and reduce CO2 emissions.
Efforts Related to Sales Activities
At our company, our sales representatives use company vehicles for purposes such as visiting clients. In order to reduce CO2 emissions from company vehicles, we are reducing the number of vehicles themselves and switching to hybrid vehicles and other vehicles that have a lower environmental impact. We began introducing hybrid vehicles in 2003, and currently all company vehicles have been switched to hybrid vehicles, contributing to a reduction in CO2 emissions.
